Action-adventure games are a special mix of two different styles. They combine the fast movement of action games with the deep stories of adventure games.

In these games, players face both physical and mental challenges. You might need quick reflexes to jump or fight. You might also need to solve tricky puzzles to move forward. These games often use audio and video to tell a complex story. The story usually changes based on how your character moves through the world. This makes the player feel like they are truly part of the tale.

Playing these games involves many different tasks and skills. You often control a single character, known as an avatar or protagonist. You might explore a large world and interact with your surroundings. Many games use an inventory system so you can collect and use items. You might even use a conversation tree to talk to other characters. This lets you pick what your character says to a non-player character, or NPC. These choices lead to different scripted responses from the other person.

The history of this genre started with early games in the late 1970s. A game called Superman from 1979 is seen as an early example. Another game, Adventure from 1980, is also called an early precursor. In 1981, Castle Wolfenstein added stealth and item collection to the mix. By the mid-1980s, the genre really began to take shape. Developers wanted to blend arcade-style play with deep exploration. Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda in 1986, which helped establish a new way to play. This series became a very famous part of action-adventure history.

There are many different types, or subgenres, of action-adventure games. Some are called Metroidvania games, which combine exploration with platform gameplay. The Resident Evil series made survival horror popular by focusing on managing items.

Other games are open world, like the Grand Theft Auto series. In these games, you can roam freely and use many vehicles. Some games focus on stealth, where you try to stay hidden. Famous names in this genre include Tomb Raider and God of War. These games use different views, like first-person or third-person, to show the world.

Action-adventure games connect to many other types of digital play. They are different from text adventures that use many typed commands. They also differ from graphic adventures that have fewer action elements.

Some games even feel like role-playing games because of how you grow your character. Because these games can be hard, companies often give players helpful clues. This helps players finish the puzzles and enjoy the story. Whether you are swinging a sword or solving a mystery, there is always something new to discover.
