Unlike action games, they do not test your quick reflexes. Instead, they focus on your ability to outthink an opponent. You often have a godlike view of the entire game world. This high perspective helps you see the big picture. You do not control every move directly. Instead, you give orders to many different units at once. You might click a unit with a mouse to pick it. Then, you select an order from a menu to tell it what to do.

There are two main ways these games work. In real-time strategy games, the action never stops.

Everything happens continuously, which can feel very fast. In turn-based strategy games, players act in separate turns. This allows more time for complex calculations and detailed plans. Some fans of real-time games like the quick decisions. Other fans prefer turn-based games for their deeper planning. Both styles offer different ways to enjoy a challenge.

Managing resources is a huge part of the experience. You might collect materials to build new things. For example, you could build a factory to make more units.

Many games use a technology tree to show progress. This is a series of advancements you can research. It helps you unlock new buildings or better combat abilities. Some players even follow a specific build order. This is a set pattern of production to reach a goal. It is a bit like a starting move in chess.

Exploring the map is another key part of the fun.

Often, the landscape starts in total darkness. Your units must move into these areas to clear the shadows. This is a design trick called the fog of war. Even if you have seen an area, it might become dim again. This happens if you do not patrol it. It means enemies could attack you from the shadows unexpectedly. Using the terrain, like hills or water, can change how battles go.

These games can take place in many different worlds. Some are set in history, like the medieval era or World War II.

Others use science fiction or fantasy settings. You might lead ships in a space strategy game. You could even play a naval strategy game on the ocean. Some games focus on big wars between many sides. Others focus on smaller battles or managing a single economy. No matter the setting, the goal is to use your mind to succeed.
