In these games, you do not use fast reflexes. Instead, you use your brain to outthink an opponent. You might lead many units at once. You do not control them directly. Instead, you give them orders through a menu. You might click a unit with your mouse to tell it where to go.

There are two main ways to play. In real-time strategy, the game never stops. Everything happens all at once.

In turn-based strategy, players take turns. You wait for your turn to act. This lets you make very detailed plans.

Many games also ask you to manage money or food. These are called resources. You can use resources to build new things. You might build a factory to make more units. You can even use a technology tree to research new skills. This tree shows a path of new things to unlock.

Most games show the world from high up. This gives you a big-picture view. You can explore dark areas to find new lands. This is often called the fog of war.
