People often call them "shmups" or "STGs" in Japan. In these games, a player controls a character or a vehicle. The goal is to fight many enemies at once. You must shoot at them while dodging their own fire. Most players must use very fast reaction times to succeed. You might also need to memorize patterns to survive. This makes the games feel very fast and intense.

How these games work can vary quite a bit. Some games use a top-down view from above. Others use a side-view to show the action. You often use ranged weapons to hit targets from a distance. Many games feature a spacecraft under constant attack. You might collect "power-ups" to help you. These items can give you extra lives or better weapons. Some weapons might even track moving enemies. Most games do not use realistic physics. This means your character can change direction instantly.

The history of these games goes back a long time. The idea of shooting games started with carnival shooting galleries. These were mechanical games found in amusement arcades. In 1962, a game called Spacewar! was made at MIT. This was one of the first video game versions. Later, the game Space Invaders became a huge hit in 1978. It set the template for many games that followed. Other hits like Asteroids and Galaxian arrived in 1979. These games helped make the genre very popular.

There are many different types of shoot 'em ups. Fixed shooters like Galaga keep everything on one screen. Multidirectional shooters like Asteroids let you move in any direction. Some games are "rail shooters" where you follow a set path. You might even play "run and gun" games like Contra. In those, characters move on foot and can jump. There are also "cute 'em ups" with bright, silly graphics. These use unusual enemies and colorful settings to stand out. Each type offers a different way to play.

Some special versions of these games are very unique. "Bullet hell" games are known for having huge amounts of projectiles.

The screen can get crowded with beautiful firing patterns. You must find tiny gaps to stay safe. There are also "trance shooters" that use electronic music. They use bright visuals to help players feel a trance-like state. Some people even play "bullet heaven" games now. In those, you collect many abilities that fill the screen. These different styles keep the genre feeling fresh and fun.
