Video games are electronic games that let you interact with a screen. You use input devices like a controller, keyboard, or joystick. These tools create visual feedback on a display. Most games are audiovisual, meaning they use sound from speakers or headphones. Some games even use haptic technology to provide tactile sensations. This means you can feel certain things while you play. You might even use a microphone or webcam to chat with others.

There are many different ways to play these games. You might visit an arcade to play on a large machine. Many people play on consoles or personal computers at home. Today, you can also play on mobile devices like smartphones. Some people use virtual reality headsets to feel like they are inside the game. Games are also grouped into genres based on their style. This helps players find the kind of gameplay they enjoy most.

The history of video games began with very large computers. In 1962, students created a game called Spacewar! on a DEC PDP-1. Later, the first arcade game called Computer Space arrived in 1971. In 1972, the Magnavox Odyssey became the first home console. That same year, the famous game Pong was released. Pong was a ping pong style game that became an icon. Both Ralph Baer and Nolan Bushnell are called the "Fathers of Video Games."

The video game industry has changed a lot over time. It had a "golden age" from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. However, the North American market crashed in 1983. After that, companies like Nintendo, Sega, and Sony led the way. In the 2010s, independent or "indie" developers became very popular. Now, the industry is a massive part of global entertainment. In 2020, the market earned about US$159 billion.

Making a modern game is a huge job for many people. It requires teamwork between developers, publishers, and hardware makers. Video games also help drive the electronics industry forward. Because players want better performance, companies invent better computer parts. You can find games that focus on winning a big fight. Other games, like walking simulators, focus on exploration instead. Every game offers a new way to experience a digital world.
