A first-person shooter, often called an FPS, is a type of action video game. In these games, you see the world through the eyes of the main character.

This special view makes you feel like you are truly inside the adventure. The main goal is usually combat using long-range weapons like firearms.

However, some games focus more on solving puzzles or telling a deep story. You might even use magic, lasers, or rockets to finish your tasks. This perspective is different from third-person games where you see the whole character.

Playing an FPS involves many moving parts to make the world feel real. Most games use a 3D environment with height, depth, and gravity.

Players often see the character's hands and weapons on the screen. A heads-up display might also show your health or how much ammo you have left. You can control your movement using a keyboard and mouse on a computer.

On game consoles, players typically use two sticks to run and aim. Some games even let you pick up items like first aid kits to stay healthy.

These games have a very interesting history that changed with technology. In the early days, they were called "corridor shooters." This was because computers could only handle small rooms and hallways.

A famous game called Wolfenstein 3D came out in 1992. Another huge hit was Doom in 1993, which made the genre very popular. For a long time, people even called new games "Doom clones" because of its success. As computers got stronger, games moved from simple hallways to huge, open worlds.

New technology helped these games look and act much better over time. The game Quake, released in 1996, was one of the first to use real-time 3D graphics.

This required special hardware called graphics processing units to work well. Later games like Duke Nukem 3D added voice acting and more interactive cities. Some games, like Rainbow Six, became more tactical and realistic. Others, like the Halo series, helped make these games a big hit on home consoles. This helped lead to the modern way we play games across different devices.

Today, first-person shooters are part of a much larger world of gaming. Some games, like BioShock, mix shooting with role-playing elements.

Other titles, like Far Cry, feel more like adventure games because you explore so much. Even games like Portal use the first-person view to help you solve puzzles. Some people even think space battle games count if you see from a cockpit. Whether you are playing alone or with friends online, there is a huge variety to enjoy.
