It was created by a group called id Software. Players take on the role of an American spy named William "B.J." Blazkowicz. The story happens during World War II. Blazkowicz must escape from a prison called Castle Wolfenstein. He also goes on many missions against Nazi forces. This game is known as a pioneer of the first-person shooter genre. It helped make fast action games popular all over the world.

Playing the game feels like moving through a maze of rooms.

Each level is built on a flat grid. The walls and doors are all the same height. To finish a level, you must find an elevator. You will face many enemies like soldiers and dogs. You can use a knife, a pistol, or a submachine gun. You might even find a rapid-fire chain gun. You must also find keys to open locked doors. Keeping track of your health and ammo is very important.

Making the game required a lot of new ideas.

Programmer John Carmack wanted to make a fast 3D game engine. He worked on prototypes like Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3-D first. These early tests used a method called ray casting. This method only calculates the surfaces the player can see. This trick allowed the computer to run the game very quickly. Designer Tom Hall and programmer John Romero helped shape the final game. They wanted it to be much faster than other games.

History shows how the team grew into id Software. The group first worked at a company called Softdisk. They made a game series called Commander Keen together. After that, they decided to start their own business. They moved to Madison, Wisconsin, to work on new projects. The game was released in two sets of three episodes. They used a system called shareware to sell it. This meant the first episode was free for everyone to try. This helped many people learn about the rest of the game.

Wolfenstein 3D was a huge success for the creators.

By the end of 1995, it had sold over 250,000 copies. Many people call it the "grandfather of 3D shooters." It set a new standard for how fast games should feel. Even though id Software did not make more in this series, others did. New games in the Wolfenstein series have been made since 2001. The game's engine was even shared with other developers. It remains a very important part of video game history.
