He helped start a company called id Software. This company made many famous games in the 1990s. These games include Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. His work changed how games look on a screen. He made the digital worlds feel much more real. This matters because his ideas helped many other games work better too.

Carmack is known for finding new ways to make 3D graphics. He created many clever tools for computer screens. For example, he used something called ray casting for games like Wolfenstein 3D. He also used binary space partitioning for the game Doom. He even invented surface caching for the game Quake. One of his most famous ideas is called Carmack's Reverse. This is a way to make shadows look right in a 3D space. These steps helped computers draw complex shapes very quickly.

His career has moved through many different types of technology. In 2013, he left id Software to join Oculus VR. He became their Chief Technology Officer, which is a top leader.
