John Warnock was a famous American computer scientist and inventor. He helped change how we use computers to share information. He is best known for starting the company Adobe Systems in 1982. He worked with his partner, Charles Geschke, to build this company. Together, they created tools for graphics and publishing. These tools helped people create beautiful things on a computer screen. His work changed the way we see and print documents every day.

Warnock used clever math to solve hard computer problems. In 1969, he created the Warnock algorithm. This is a set of steps to help computers draw images. It works by dividing a scene into smaller, simpler parts. The computer keeps dividing the scene until it is easy to draw. This allowed computers to show solid objects instead of just simple lines. This discovery was so important it was featured in Scientific American in 1970.

Warnock grew up in Utah and went to the University of Utah. He studied math and philosophy before earning a doctorate in electrical engineering. He worked at a place called Xerox PARC before starting Adobe. He and Geschke named their new company after Adobe Creek. This creek ran behind both of their homes. In 1985, they brought PostScript to the Apple LaserWriter. This technology allowed computers to print very clear text and images. Steve Jobs said this had a profound impact on the world.

Warnock continued to invent many important things during his career. In 1986, he invented Adobe Illustrator to help his wife, Marva. She was a graphic designer who needed help with manual tasks. In 1991, he outlined a system called Camelot. This became the Portable Document Format, or PDF. The PDF lets people send documents anywhere and view them on any machine. He also held twenty different patents for his many inventions.

Because of his great work, Warnock received many honors. In 2009, President Barack Obama gave him the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. He also helped many people through his charity work. He and Marva donated money to the University of Utah. Their gift helped finish a new engineering building in 2007. They also supported medical research to help people with eye problems. Warnock lived a full life of making the world a better place.
