A PDF is a special kind of computer file. It stands for Portable Document Format. This file type is very important for sharing work. It helps documents look the same on every screen. This works even if you use different apps or computers.

It keeps the text and pictures in the right place. This makes it a great tool for digital reading.

PDF files work by bundling many things together. They hold text and special fonts. They also hold vector graphics, which are shapes made of lines. They can hold raster graphics, which are photos. Some files even have video or 3D objects inside.

They can even have interactive forms or web links. All these parts live inside one single file.

This way of working started with a project called Camelot. John Warnock was a co-founder of Adobe. He wrote a paper about this in 1991. He wanted a way to show pages on any screen. Adobe then made the PDF format in 1993. At first, it was mostly used for desktop publishing. It competed with other formats like DjVu and Envoy.

PDF was based on a language called PostScript. PostScript was made to send jobs to a printer. It was a very complex way to work. PDF is a simpler version of that language. It uses a set of steps to show the layout. It also uses data compression to keep the file size small.

This makes the files easy to send to others.

Adobe controlled the PDF format for many years. This changed on July 1, 2008. On that day, it became an open standard. This means it is known as ISO 32000-1. Now, a committee of experts helps manage it. The PDF Association is the manager of this committee.
