James Gosling is a famous computer scientist from Canada. He is best known for creating Java. Java is a programming language used to give instructions to computers.

This invention changed how software works across the world. He also helped design windowing systems. These systems help people see and use computer screens. His work is very important to modern technology.

Gosling developed Java by using a virtual machine. A virtual machine is a part of a computer that acts like a real one.

He wanted programs to run the same way on many different machines. He saw that this could happen if everyone programmed for the same virtual machine. This idea is called architecture-neutral execution. It means the software does not care what the hardware looks like. This makes it much easier to share programs.

His journey started in Calgary, Alberta. He was born there on May 19, 1955.

While in high school, he wrote software for the ISIS 2 satellite. He studied at the University of Calgary. Later, he earned his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. During his time as a student, he even wrote a version of a program called Gosmacs.

Gosling joined Sun Microsystems in 1984. He worked there for 26 years.

In 1994, he is credited with inventing the Java programming language. He designed the original version and its compiler. He also invented an early windowing system called NeWS. After Sun was bought by Oracle, he left on April 2, 2010. He later worked at Google and a startup called Liquid Robotics. He also worked at Amazon Web Services.

Many groups have honored his great work.

The National Academy of Engineering elected him as a member in 2004. He received the Economist Innovation Award in 2002. In 2007, he became an Officer of the Order of Canada. This is a very high honor in his home country. The Computer History Museum named him a Fellow in 2019. He officially retired in July 2024. His life shows how one person can shape the digital world.
