Guido van Rossum is a famous programmer from the Netherlands.

He is best known for creating the Python programming language. This language helps people give instructions to computers. For a long time, he was the leader of Python. People called him the "benevolent dictator for life." This was a special title for his role in the project. He eventually stepped down from this leadership position on July 12, 2018.

He stayed on the steering council for a little longer.

Creating Python was a way for Guido to stay busy. In December 1989, his office was closed for the Christmas holidays. He decided to write a new scripting language during this time. He wanted it to be a descendant of a language called ABC. He wanted the code to be easy to read. He hoped it would look like plain English. This makes it easier for people to finish tasks quickly. He named the language Python after a funny comedy show. It was not named after the snake.

Guido has worked at many important places throughout his life. He earned a degree in math and computer science in 1982. He worked at a place called CWI in the Netherlands. Later, he worked for companies like Google and Dropbox. At Google, he spent half his time working on Python. He also made a tool called Mondrian for code reviews. He named it after a Dutch painter named Piet Mondrian. In 2013, he moved to work at Dropbox. After a short retirement, he joined Microsoft in November 2020.

Python has become a huge success in the world of technology. In 2019, it was the second most popular language on GitHub. By 2024, it became the most used language on that site. It even passed JavaScript after a ten-year run. Many jobs look for people who can use Python. The TIOBE index shows it has been very popular since 2004. It even reached the number one spot in October 2021. This shows how much people rely on his creation every day.

Guido has received many honors for his hard work. He won a bronze medal in a math contest in 1974. The Free Software Foundation gave him an award in 2002. He was also named an ACM Distinguished Engineer in 2006. In 2018, the Computer History Museum made him a Fellow. He received the C&C Prize from NEC Corporation in 2023. His brother, Just van Rossum, is also a programmer. Just even designed the logo used for Python. This shows how much his family is involved in technology.
