Jaap Kunst was a man who loved music. He was born in the Netherlands in 1891. His parents were both pianists. He began playing the violin when he was only five.

Kunst wanted to study how people make music. He traveled to Indonesia to learn more. There, he heard a gamelan. A gamelan is a group of instruments that play together. He was very impressed by the sound.

Kunst stayed in Java for fifteen years. He was the first person to record gamelan music on wax cylinders. These were early tools used to save sound. He also collected many photos and instruments. His wife, Kathy, helped him with his work.

He created a new name for his field. He called it ethnomusicology. This means studying music and the culture it comes from. He believed all music is just as smart as music in Europe.

Kunst wrote more than 70 books and papers. Today, people still honor him. A special prize is given to researchers in his name. This prize helps people study music from all over the world.
