Eugène Dubois was a scientist who studied the past. He was a paleoanthropologist, which is a person who studies old fossils. He wanted to find the link between apes and humans. This means he looked for creatures that lived in between.

Dubois went on a big search. He moved to the Dutch East Indies. This place is now called Indonesia. He looked near rivers and in caves. In 1891, he made a huge discovery on the island of Java. He found bones from a creature he called "Java Man."

Scientists now call this creature Homo erectus. This name means "human that stands upright." These were the first such fossils found outside of Africa or Europe. His work changed how we think about human history. He looked at fossils in a new way. He focused on how species change over time. Even an asteroid was named after him to show his importance.
