Jaap Kunst was a man who changed how we study music. He was a Dutch musicologist who lived from 1891 to 1960. He believed that music cannot be understood without its culture. This means we must look at the people and their ways of life. He felt that music from other continents was just as smart as European music. This idea helped change the way scholars thought about the world.

Kunst worked in a very specific way to learn about sounds. He did not just listen to melodies. He also studied the history and the people behind the songs. He used field studies to gather real information. This involved traveling to new places to hear music firsthand. He was the first person to record gamelan music on wax cylinders. These cylinders were early tools used to capture and save sounds.

His journey into new music began with a big trip. In 1919, he went to the Dutch East Indies with a musical trio. They performed 95 times during that tour. While in Yogyakarta, he heard a gamelan ensemble at the Paku Alaman palace. This experience changed his life forever. He decided to stay in Java to study the music. He lived there for fifteen years and worked for the government.

Kunst was a very busy researcher and writer. He published more than 70 different texts during his career. Some of his famous books include "Music in Java" and "Music in Flores." He also wrote "Musicologica" in 1950. This book helped popularize the term "ethnomusicology." He coined this name to describe his field of study. It replaced the older name, comparative musicology.

Today, the work of Jaap Kunst still helps many people. He helped build a massive archive of recordings and instruments. Much of this collection went to the National Museum of Indonesia. His name is also tied to a special award. Since 1965, the Society for Ethnomusicology has given out a prize in his name. Since 2019, this prize is for researchers in their first ten years of work. It helps new people continue his important legacy.
