Most bands have ten or more players. They often use four main sections. There are trumpets and trombones. There are also saxophones. A rhythm section keeps the beat. This part uses drums, piano, and bass.

Some bands played fast, hard tunes. Other bands played slower, sweet songs.

In a big band, everyone has a job. A composer writes the original music. An arranger changes that music for the band. A bandleader leads the group. They help the band play with feeling. Some bands use written music called charts. Other bands use head arrangements. This means they make the music up during practice. They memorize the parts without using paper. Today, some big bands are even larger. They can have 50 players in one group!
