Many groups have a leader. In a rock band, there is a band leader. In an orchestra, there is a conductor. A conductor helps everyone play at once. In an orchestra, the first violin player is the concertmaster. This person is an instrumental leader.

Small groups are often called chamber music. A duo has two people. A trio has three. A quartet has four. A quintet has five.

Large groups can be very big. A symphony orchestra can have over one hundred players. They use many families of instruments. There are strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

A concert band is also large. It uses woodwinds, brass, and percussion. It does not use a string section. Some groups play special music. A Mariachi group from Mexico uses violins and guitars. They also use a large bass called a guitarrón.
