Communication means sharing information.

It happens when a sender sends a message to a receiver. This can happen between people, animals, or even computers.

Humans use many ways to communicate. Verbal communication uses words. This includes speaking, writing, or using sign language.

Non-verbal communication does not use words. Instead, it uses facial expressions, touch, or body language. People also use intrapersonal communication to talk to themselves.

Animals and plants communicate too. Animals use signals for mating or self-defense. Plants use chemicals to send warnings. For example, maple trees let out special compounds into the air. This warns other plants about bugs that might eat them.

Some flowers use bright colors to show insects where nectar is.

Scientists use models to study these steps. One model is the Shannon-Weaver model. It shows how a source makes a message. A transmitter then turns it into a signal. This signal travels through a channel, like a wire. Finally, a receiver turns the signal back into a message. Noise can sometimes change the signal along the way.
