Information is a way to tell us things.

It is not the same as knowledge. Instead, it is the meaning we find in things. We can find information in patterns. We can see it in a picture or hear it in music.

Information works in many steps. Think about a book. First, we see a letter. That letter is part of a word. The word is part of a phrase. The phrase is part of a sentence. Each step gives us more meaning. This is how we turn data into knowledge.

We can also use bits to store information. A bit is a small unit. It helps reduce what we do not know. One coin flip gives us one bit of information.

Different people see different things. A geologist might look at a stone. They see one kind of information. An archaeologist might look at the same stone. They see something else. The stone tells a new story to each person.
