Information is a special concept that has the power to tell us things.

It is not the same thing as knowledge itself. Instead, information is the meaning we find when we look at something. We can find information in many different patterns. It might be in a song or a bright picture. It can even be in the way a natural process works. Any pattern that is not totally random can carry information.

This helps us understand the world around us.

Information often works in a series of steps. Think about how you read a written book. First, you see a single letter or a symbol. That letter is part of a word. The word is part of a phrase. The phrase is part of a sentence. Each step helps you build more meaning.

This process turns raw data into real knowledge. In computers, bits work in a similar way. These tiny bits are turned into letters or numbers. This allows us to process information one level at a time.

People have studied this idea for a very long time. The word comes from Latin words about teaching or creating. In the 14th century, people used it to mean training or instruction. Later, the idea changed as people studied how we sense the world. A major change happened in the 1940s. A scientist named Claude Shannon helped start information theory.

This was the scientific study of how we store and send information. His work helped make things like the Internet possible.

There are many important facts about how we measure information. Scientists use a unit called a bit to measure it. A bit is something that reduces uncertainty by half. For example, flipping one fair coin gives you one bit of information.

Flipping two fair coins gives you two bits. We also use a measure called entropy to see how much uncertainty exists. In 2007, a study found that 97% of stored information was digital. The year 2002 was the start of the digital age for storage.

Information can look different to different people. Imagine a large stone sitting in a field.

A geologist might look at that stone and see one kind of information. An archaeologist might look at the same stone and see something else. The stone tells a new story based on what the person knows. Information can also be sent through space or time. We use tools like telecommunication to move it. We can even hide information using encryption to keep it safe.
