Means of communication

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

People use many different ways to share information. These ways are called means of communication. A sender gives a message to a receiver. This can happen through a path. Some paths are physical, like a road for a courier. Other paths are non-physical, like a computer network.

Communication makes our world much easier to understand. It helps us exchange news, data, and even feelings. Maps are a great example of this. They save us from long, confusing explanations about where to go. Communication tools help make our messages much clearer.

There are many ways these messages move. Natural communication uses our bodies and voices. You might use speech or even a loud scream. You can use sign language with hand movements. Even a wink or a facial expression is a way to communicate.

Technical communication uses tools to help us. This includes writing on paper or using a telephone. Some tools use screens to show us pictures and text. You can send an email or a text message. You can even use a webcam to see someone far away. These tools help us send information to one person or many people at once.

Communication has changed a lot over time. Before the 19th century, people mostly talked about roads and railways. They thought of canals and stagecoaches as ways to communicate. In 1861, an economist named Albert Schäffle had a new idea. He said communication tools help goods and money move around. He included things like newspapers, mail, and telegraphs.

By 1895, a newspaper called Deutsches Wochenblatt noticed a big change. They said new technical tools made everyone in the world feel like a neighbor. This was because technology made it easier to reach people everywhere.

Today, we use mass media to reach huge groups of people. Mass media can be a book, a newspaper, or a radio show. Television uses radio waves to send images and sound. Social media is a very popular way to connect now. In 2005, only 5% of people used social media. By 2019, that number jumped to 79%.

Most people spend about 2.5 hours on social media every day. Many people use apps like Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook. They even use these apps to read the news. It is a very fast way to get information.

Video games are another big way that people communicate. About 2.3 billion people play digital games around the world. Many players use microphones to talk while they play. This helps them make friends even if they are far apart. Games also have ratings to keep things safe for kids. The ESRB gives ratings like "E" for Everyone or "T" for Teen.

These ratings help people choose the right games to play. Gaming can even help scientists learn new things through research. It is a modern way to build communities and share ideas.
