Information

Information is an abstract concept that describes anything with the power to inform. It is not the same thing as knowledge itself. Instead, information is the meaning we derive from a representation through interpretation. At a fundamental level, it involves interpreting things we sense or their abstractions. Any natural process that is not completely random conveys information. Any observable pattern in any medium can also carry information.

This makes information a vital part of how we understand the universe.

Information is often processed in an iterative way, meaning it happens in repeating steps. Data at one step is processed into information for the next step. Consider the process of reading written text. Each individual symbol or letter conveys information relevant to its word. Each word then conveys information relevant to the phrase it belongs to. Each phrase provides information for the entire sentence. Finally, this information is interpreted to become knowledge within a specific domain.

Digital signals work similarly, where bits are interpreted into symbols or structures.

There are different ways that information is expressed and structured. It can be structured as data, which can sometimes be compressed to an optimal size. This is known as the theoretical limit of compression. Information can be continuous, such as analogue signals, music, or pictures. It can also be discrete, such as digital signals that use specific signs. Information can be transmitted through space via telecommunication or through time via data storage. It can even be encoded into sequences of signs or encrypted for safe communication.

Humans have studied the concept of information for centuries. The English word comes from Middle French and Latin roots meaning teaching or creation. In the 14th century, it referred to training or instruction. During the transition from the Middle Ages to Modernity, the meaning shifted. It moved from the idea of giving "form" to matter to the idea of communicating something to someone.

In the modern era, the most significant influence is information theory. This field was established in the 1940s by Claude Shannon and others, building on earlier work by Harry Nyquist and Ralph Hartley.

Information theory is the scientific study of how we quantify, store, and communicate information. It sits at the intersection of many fields, including computer science, physics, and electrical engineering. A key measure in this field is entropy. Entropy quantifies the amount of uncertainty in a random process. For example, identifying the outcome of a fair coin flip provides less information than a roll of a six-sided die.

More uncertain events require more information to resolve that uncertainty.

Scientists use specific units to measure information. The bit is the standard unit. A bit is defined as that which reduces uncertainty by half. For instance, one fair coin flip provides exactly 1 bit of information. Two fair coin flips provide 2 bits. Another unit that can be used is the nat. The digital age for information storage truly began around the year 2002. By 2007, a study estimated that 97% of technologically stored information was already in digital bits.

Information can also be subjective, meaning it changes based on the observer. A single object can contain different information for different people. For example, a stone in a field provides different information to a geologist than it does to an archaeologist. The information depends on the person's educational background and their role in society.

This shows that information is closely tied to how we perceive and categorize the world around us.
