Information technology, or IT, is the study of computers and other tools. These tools help us create, process, store, and send information.

IT includes computer networks and devices like telephones or televisions. It is a way to use computer science and engineering in real life. IT systems help many different industries manage data and talk to each other. These systems are vital for keeping communication networks running smoothly.

How IT works involves several important steps. First, a system takes in data to process it. This might mean using math to help people make decisions. Then, the system stores that information so it can be used later.

Finally, the system transmits the information to other people or places. This can happen through telephone lines or cable networks. For example, email lets companies talk to suppliers across the world. This way of working makes many hard jobs much faster.

Humans have shared information since the first writing systems were made. Long ago, people likely used tally sticks to help with counting.

The Antikythera mechanism is a very old geared machine from the first century BC. It is considered the first mechanical analog computer. In 1958, the term "information technology" first appeared in an article. Authors Harold J. Leavitt and Thomas L. Whisler gave it that name. They wanted a way to describe these new, growing technologies.

Many pioneers helped build the machines we use today. Alan Turing, J. Presper Eckert, and John Mauchly worked on early computers.

In 1956, IBM introduced the first hard disk drive. By 1971, a team at Intel invented the microprocessor. These many inventions led to the personal computers of the 1970s.

Today, IT is part of almost everything we do. We use it to shop online and use many internet services.

In 2002, digital storage became larger than analog storage for the first time. Most data in the world is now held in digital forms. This includes things like hard disks and optical devices. We rely on these tools to communicate and work every single day. The world of technology continues to grow and change quickly.
