In 1958, the term "information technology" first appeared in an article. Authors Harold J. Leavitt and Thomas L. Whisler gave it that name. They wanted a way to describe these new, growing technologies.

Many pioneers helped build the machines we use today. Alan Turing, J. Presper Eckert, and John Mauchly worked on early computers.

For example, email allows a company to communicate with a supplier in a different part of the world. This ability to move data quickly has revolutionized how the global workforce operates.

Historians distinguish between four distinct phases of IT development based on how data is stored and processed. The first is the pre-mechanical phase, which lasted from 3000 BC to 1450 AD. The second is the mechanical phase from 1450 to 1840. The third is the electromechanical phase from 1840 to 1940. The final phase is the electronic phase, which began in 1940 and continues today. In the earliest days, humans used simple tools like tally sticks for computation. The Antikythera mechanism, dating to the first century BC, is an important example. It is considered the first known mechanical analog computer and the earliest known geared mechanism.

Modern computing history was shaped by many important pioneers. During the mid-1900s, Alan Turing, J. Presper Eckert, and John Mauchly led early efforts. Turing even began to ask questions about artificial intelligence. In 1941, the electromechanical Zuse Z3 was completed, becoming the world's first programmable computer.

During the Second World War, the Colossus was developed to decrypt German messages. It was an electronic digital computer, but it was not general-purpose. It could not store programs in memory; instead, users changed internal wiring with plugs and switches. The first modern electronic digital stored-program computer was the Manchester Baby, which ran its first program on 21 June 1948.

Technological breakthroughs in the mid-20th century changed everything. In the late 1940s, Bell Laboratories developed transistors. This allowed computers to use much less power. For comparison, the Ferranti Mark I used 4050 valves and consumed 25 kilowatts of power.

However, a transistorized computer from the University of Manchester used only 150 watts by November 1953. Other major inventions included the integrated circuit, created in 1959 by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce. In 1971, the microprocessor was invented by Ted Hoff, Federico Faggin, Masatoshi Shima, and Stanley Mazor at Intel. These steps led to the personal computer in the 1970s.

Data storage has also seen massive changes over time. Early computers like Colossus used punched tape, which is a strip of paper with holes.

Digital storage began during World War II with delay-line memory. The first non-volatile storage, meaning it keeps data without power, was the magnetic drum invented in 1932. IBM introduced the first hard disk drive in 1956. By 2002, digital storage capacity finally exceeded analog storage capacity. By that year, 94% of the world's data was held digitally. This included 52% on hard disks, 28% on optical devices, and 11% on digital magnetic tape.

Today, IT connects to almost every part of modern life. It has changed how we shop, with e-commerce sales reaching $289 billion by 2012. It also manages huge amounts of data through Database Management Systems (DMS). These systems were created in the 1960s to store and retrieve data accurately. In the 1970s, Ted Codd proposed the relational storage model, which uses tables, rows, and columns. This led to the first commercial relational database from Oracle in 1981. As computers become more sophisticated, our reliance on these digital systems continues to grow.
