life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Animals share news with each other. This is called communication. One animal sends a signal to another. A signal is a piece of information. It can change how the receiver acts.

Many animals use sound to talk. Some use bird calls to warn others. Others use long songs to find mates.

Some insects use stridulation. This means they rub body parts together to make noise. Crickets are a good example.

Animals also use sight. Some can change their skin color. An octopus uses chromatophores, which are special skin cells. These cells help the animal hide or hunt.

Other animals use light. Some creatures are bioluminescent. This means they can make their own light. This helps them find mates in the dark sea.

Smell is another way to send news. Animals can detect chemicals in the air or water. A small fish might smell a predator. This helps the fish hide quickly.
