While many animals can perform geometric gaze-following, others like marmosets and ibis cannot. These two types of following likely rely on different cognitive mechanisms.
Color change is another complex visual mechanism. Some changes occur during growth, while others are triggered by mood, social context, or abiotic factors like temperature. Cephalopods, such as the octopus and cuttlefish, use specialized skin cells called chromatophores. These cells change the color, opacity, and reflectiveness of their skin. This helps with camouflage, hunting, and courtship. 
Auditory communication involves the use of sound to convey messages. Vocalization is used for mating rituals, warning calls, and finding food. For example, the vervet monkey uses distinct alarm calls for different predators. An alarm for a python causes monkeys to climb trees, while an eagle alarm causes them to hide on the ground.
Not all sounds are made with voices. Many arthropods use stridulation, which is the act of rubbing specialized body parts together. Crickets and grasshoppers are common examples, but this also occurs in spiders, scorpions, and many insects. Other animals use mechanical sounds, such as the tail tip vibration of a rattlesnake or the bill clacking of birds. 
Chemical communication, or olfactory signaling, is one of the oldest methods of communication. It involves detecting chemical compounds in the environment. This ability first appeared in single-celled bacteria in the early oceans. Animals use these scents to distinguish between food, mates, and different species.
