It began in African American communities during the 1940s. This music has a heavy and steady beat. It often blends sounds from jazz, blues, and gospel music.

Bands in the 1950s used many instruments. They played the piano, drums, and bass. They also used guitars and saxophones.

Many bands wore smart suits or even uniforms. Singers often sang with deep feeling. Yet, they stayed cool and calm while they performed.

The songs tell stories about life. They talk about joy and the search for freedom. They also talk about hard times and big dreams.

Some early styles were called jump blues. This style helped lead to rock and roll.

In the 1970s, the name R&B covered soul and funk music. Later, a new style called contemporary R&B appeared. This new style mixes R&B with electronic sounds and disco. The music continues to change and grow today.
