It started in African-American communities during the 1940s. Many groups lived in big cities like New York and Chicago. This music uses vocal harmony. That means many voices sing together in different parts. Most songs have a lead singer. The other singers provide the background. They often use nonsense words like "doo-wop" to make a beat.

Some singers did not have money for instruments. They practiced on street corners or under bridges. These spots had great echoes. They used their voices to act like drums or bass instruments. The Orioles were a famous group that helped shape this sound. They sang hits like "It's Too Soon to Know."

Other groups were also very popular. Some groups had both Black and white members. This helped the music reach many different people. Doo-wop was very popular in the 1950s. It still influences how people make music today.
