It began in African-American communities in the mid-1960s. Musicians mixed different styles to make a new sound. This sound has a strong, steady beat called a groove.

The rhythm section is the heartbeat of the music. This group includes the drums and the electric bass. The bass player is very important in funk. The bass often plays the main part of the song.

Some players use a style called slap and pop. They hit the strings with their thumbs. Then they pluck the strings with their fingers. This makes the bass sound almost like a drum.

Funk uses slower speeds than some other pop music. This gives the players more space to play complex rhythms. Many musicians play together to create a hypnotic feel. They might jam or have a musical conversation. This helps the group find a great groove together.
