It began in Jamaica in the late 1950s. Musicians mixed Caribbean sounds with American jazz and blues. This new style had a very special beat. A guitar makes a quick sound on the off beat. This is called a skank.

The music also uses horns and a walking bass line. In the 1960s, ska was very popular. It helped people celebrate when Jamaica became independent in 1962.

Later, a new style called 2 tone arrived in Britain.

This music mixed ska with the fast sound of punk rock. It had a harder edge. Many 2 tone bands had members from different races. This helped promote unity and friendship. In the late 1980s, a third wave of ska began. These bands came from many countries. They often used large horn sections and loud guitars. Today, people all over the world play ska. It is a sound that brings people together to dance.
