It began in South London in the early 2000s. The music has roots in Jamaican sound system parties from the 1980s. Most dubstep songs have a dark feel. They use deep basslines that are very strong.

Some tracks use a special sound called wobble bass. This is also called a "wub." It happens when a machine changes the volume or tone of a bass note. This makes the sound feel like it is moving. Many songs also have a "bass drop." This is when the drums stop for a moment. Then, the music comes back with very heavy bass.

DJs often use a move called a rewind. They spin the record back by hand to play a part again. This happens when a song is very popular. In the United States, a style called brostep became very famous. It uses heavy metal sounds and is led by artists like Skrillex. Other styles like chillstep are much softer and more melodic.
