In the early days, people called it Bashment music. The name Dancehall comes from the places where people met to dance. These were often open-air venues. In the 1980s, the name became one word. This helped the music travel to other countries.

Dancehall has a special sound. It uses a local way of speaking called Patois. It also focuses on the riddim, which is the beat or instrumental track. Some artists use digital tools to make faster rhythms. This style is sometimes called ragga.
