In the past, samba was very different. It began as a popular dance. Later, it became a type of music. Some people danced in a circle. They used special steps. One step is called "pick-the-grape."

Samba uses many percussion instruments. These are tools that make sound when hit. You might hear a pandeiro, which is a small drum. You might hear a surdo, which is a large drum. People also use guitars and a small instrument called a cavaquinho.

Samba has many different styles. One style is called bossa nova. Another style is called pagode. In the early days, the law was not kind to samba. The government even tried to stop it. Musicians had to play in secret. Today, samba is loved by many people. It is a big part of the Carnival festival.
