This music is a relaxed version of samba. Musicians use the classical guitar to make the sound. They use their fingers instead of a plastic pick. A player named João Gilberto changed how people play. He used his thumb to mimic a large drum. His other fingers plucked strings like a small drum called a tamborim. This creates a swaying rhythm. It feels like the music is moving side to side.

Singers often use a soft, nasal voice. This is different from the loud styles used before. The songs often tell stories about love, nature, or feeling homesick. Bossa nova has helped modernize Brazilian music. It also has many fans in the jazz world. Even rock bands have used its drum beats in their songs. It remains a very popular sound today.
