He was a singer and a guitar player. He helped start a new style of music. We call this music bossa nova. This style mixes samba with jazz. It sounds soft and calm.

Gilberto changed how music was recorded. Before him, people used only one microphone. This made the voice much louder than the guitar. Gilberto used two microphones instead. One was for his voice. One was for his guitar. This let them sound equal. He sang in a very natural way. It sounded like he was just talking.

His music became a huge success. He worked with a man named Antônio Carlos Jobim. They made many great songs together. In 1964, his album Getz/Gilberto won big awards. It was the first jazz album to win Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
