These songs use clever words to talk about love.

A man named Pepe Sánchez is the father of this style. He wrote the first bolero in 1883. It was called "Tristezas." He was a gifted musician who played the guitar.

He did not write his songs down. Instead, he kept them in his head.

At first, one person sang while playing guitar. Later, musicians played in small groups. They formed duos or trios. Groups like Trío Matamoros helped the music become famous.

Bolero has changed many times. It can mix with other rhythms. This created new styles like bolero-son and bolero-cha. The music traveled far. It became popular in Spain and the United States. It even reached Vietnam. In Vietnam, people called it "yellow music." Even today, people still love to sing these songs.
