arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

House music is a type of dance music. It started in Chicago in the 1980s. DJs made it by changing disco songs. They gave the music a steady, mechanical beat. This beat is often called a four-on-the-floor rhythm.

It uses electronic drum machines to make sounds. The low bass sounds are the most important part.

Some music uses a machine called a TB-303 to make squelchy sounds. This style is called acid house.

Many people helped start this music. Frankie Knuckles is known as the "godfather of house."

The name "house" might come from a club called the Warehouse. Other people say it means music made at home. House music brings people together. It helps different groups dance in one happy place. One way to dance is called "the jack." You move your body like a wave to the beat.
