He helped create house music. This is a type of dance music. It began in Chicago during the early 1980s. It soon spread all over the world.

Knuckles worked at a club called the Warehouse. Many people went there to dance. The name "house" comes from that club. To make new sounds, Knuckles used a drum machine. This machine made strong, steady beats. He also made re-edits of old songs. He would add new parts to make them feel fresh.

He was very skilled at his work. He won a Grammy Award in 1997. People call him the "Godfather of House Music." He often wore a simple black t-shirt while he played. This helped people focus on the music itself.

Chicago honors his great work. A street near the old Warehouse is named Frankie Knuckles Way.
