Vocal harmony

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

People love to sing together in different ways. This is called vocal harmony. In this style, singers sing different notes at the same time. One singer sings the main melody. Other singers add notes to support that melody. This can make the music sound sweet.

Many kinds of music use harmony. Classical music and opera use it. Pop and rock bands use it too. In a pop band, backup singers must stay in tune. They must also match the beat of the band. Some bands sing a cappella. This means they sing without any instruments.

One special style is the barbershop quartet. Four singers work together in this group.

The lead singer sings the main tune. The tenor sings a high note. The bass sings very low notes. The baritone sings a note to finish the chord.

Doo-wop is another fun style. It started in African-American groups in the 1940s. These singers use smooth harmonies. They even use their voices to sound like instruments. They might sing nonsense words to mimic a bass. This makes the music very rhythmic and lively.
