Voice leading

Music is made of many moving parts.

These parts are called voices. Voice leading is how these voices move together. It helps create harmonies, which are groups of notes played at once.

Good voice leading often sounds smooth. To stay smooth, voices move in small steps. They try to avoid big leaps. Big leaps can be hard for singers.

Composers also try to keep voices independent. This means the lines do not move in the exact same way. If they move too much like one another, the music might sound plain.

In the Baroque era, different voices had different jobs. Outer voices often moved by large leaps. They helped lead the music. Inner voices moved in small steps or stayed on the same note. This helped the music feel steady.

Many types of music use these ideas. Classical music uses them a lot. Jazz and pop music use them too. In pop music, people often think of chords as big blocks. They then put a melody on top. Even so, voice leading is still there to help the music flow.
