Cadence

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

In music, a cadence is a way to end a phrase. It is a set of notes or chords. These sounds help a song feel finished. Some cadences feel very strong. They give a sense of full closure. Others feel weak. They make the listener wait for more music.

One strong type is the authentic cadence. It moves from a dominant chord to a tonic chord. A perfect authentic cadence is the strongest kind. It often marks a very important moment in a piece.

A half cadence is a weak type. It ends on a dominant chord. This sounds incomplete. It calls for the music to keep going.

Some cadences can surprise you. A deceptive cadence is also called an interrupted cadence. It moves to a chord that is not the tonic. This creates a "hanging" feeling. It can feel like a sudden sidestep in the music.

There is also the plagal cadence. Many people call it the "Amen" cadence. This is because it is used in many hymns.

Finally, a Picardy third is a special tool. It uses a major chord to end a piece in a minor key. This can change the mood at the very end.
