Music can change its sound to stay exciting.

This change is called modulation. It moves the music from one key to another. Modulation helps create the shape of a song. It can make a piece feel new or different.

One way to do this is with a common-chord modulation. This uses a chord that both keys share.

Common-chord modulation in Tchaikovsky, Mazurka Op. 39, No. 10

Using a shared chord makes the change feel smooth.

Another way is common-tone modulation. This uses just one note to bridge the keys. A musician might hold one note while the rest of the music changes.

There is also enharmonic modulation. This happens when a chord is spelled in a new way. It can move the music to a key that is far away.

Schubert - op.9 D.365, mm.17-24 German sixth modulation

Finally, there is chromatic modulation. This uses notes that change by just a small step. This can help move between keys that are not close to each other.
