It looks like you are gliding across the floor. People dance to big band music. This style of dance is very old. It began in the 1910s. It was very popular in the 1930s. Many people still practice it today.

Some say the name comes from Harry Fox. Other sources say African American dancers started the dance. A man named Vernon Castle helped make it famous. He and his wife, Irene Castle, gave it a graceful style. They once called it the Bunny Hug. Later, they changed the name to the foxtrot.

There are three main ways to dance the foxtrot. The American Social Style is good for parties. It is easy to do in a crowded room. Dancers do not need to touch bodies. This helps if you do not know your partner well. The American Continuity Style is used in movies and plays. It is faster and more smooth. Partners can move into many different shapes. The International Style is common in Europe. In this style, partners must touch at all times. It is a very hard dance to learn well.
