Hip-hop dance is a vibrant collection of street dance styles.

It is often performed to hip-hop music or evolved within that culture. Many people love it because it can be a hobby or a profession. You can see it in dance studios or in outdoor spaces. Dancers often use freestyle, which means they make up moves as they go. This leads to exciting competitions called battles.

These battles allow dancers to show off their unique skills and energy.

Breaking is one of the most famous styles in this culture.

It has four main parts that dancers use to express themselves. First is toprock, which is dancing while standing up. Next is downrock, where dancers use their hands and feet on the floor. Then there are freezes, which are stylish poses held on the hands. Finally, there are power moves, which are impressive acrobatic moves. Dancers move from standing to the floor using a move called a drop.

This dance style began in the South Bronx, New York, during the early 1970s.

African Americans created breaking, and Puerto Rican dancers helped it grow and evolve. In 1973, DJ Kool Herc helped change how the music worked. He used two turntables to loop the rhythmic part of a song. This part is called the break beat. Because they danced to these breaks, dancers became known as b-boys and b-girls. This helped the dance become a huge part of hip-hop culture.

While breaking started in New York, other styles grew on the West Coast.

In California, dancers created funk styles like locking and popping. Don "Campbellock" Campbell created locking in Los Angeles in 1969. His crew, The Lockers, helped make this style famous. Many people call all these styles "breakdancing," but they have different roots. Some styles were originally danced to funk music rather than hip-hop. Today, these different movements are all part of the larger hip-hop family.

Hip-hop dance has moved from the streets to the global stage.

Movies and television shows helped bring the dance to many people. Shows like Soul Train and films like Wild Style showed these styles to the world. Now, you can find hip-hop in theater and big competitions. Groups like World of Dance help keep the dance alive everywhere. It remains a way for people to stay active and share their creativity.
