It started in the Bronx, a part of New York City. Many Black and Latino youth created this culture to express themselves. It is much more than just music. It includes many different ways to make art and share ideas. People use it to tell stories and even to protest unfair rules.

This movement has grown from local neighborhoods to become a global phenomenon. Today, it connects people all over the world through shared styles.

There are four main pillars that hold hip-hop together.

First is DJing, where people use turntables to play music. They often use a technique called "breakbeat" to loop drum parts. Second is emceeing, which is also called rapping. This is the rhythmic delivery of rhymes and clever wordplay. Third is breaking, a high-energy dance style.

Dancers are often called b-boys or b-girls. The fourth pillar is graffiti, which is colorful art made with spray paint. These elements work together to create a complete culture.

The history of hip-hop is filled with many important people.

Many point to August 11, 1973, as a major starting point. On that day, Cindy Campbell and her brother DJ Kool Herc hosted a party. Cindy is often called the Mother of Hip Hop for her work. Some people also honor Disco King Mario for his outdoor park jams. Other pioneers like Afrika Bambaataa helped spread the culture. Even the name "hip hop" has a funny story. A member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five named Keith "Cowboy" Wiggins likely coined it in 1978.

Many specific facts help us understand how hip-hop grew so fast.

In 1979, the song "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang became a huge hit. This helped the music move from the streets to the mainstream. DJs like Grandwizard Theodore also added new skills like "scratching" around 1977. In the 1990s, the culture spread to new continents and merged with local styles. By the 2000s, fans used websites like YouTube and Spotify to find new music. Today, hip-hop is practiced in almost every corner of the globe.

Hip-hop is unique because it loves to use the past to make the future.

Artists use a method called "sampling" to take bits of old records. They use these sounds to make something totally new. In hip-hop, this process is often called "flipping." This connects hip-hop to older musical styles like jazz, blues, and funk. It is a way of updating old experiences for modern audiences. By reusing classic sounds, hip-hop keeps history alive in a fresh way.
