It grew when mambo music became popular. People in Latin America loved the sound. The dance feels full of energy. It is a way to show joy. Many people find it very exciting to watch and do.

In Cuba, the dance was about freedom. It came from a dance called danzón. The mambo version was faster. It was also less stiff or rigid. Dancers used a part called the mambo section. This part let them express themselves freely. They did not use set steps. Cuban dancers called this "feeling the music." They merged their bodies with the sound.

Music and dance moved from Havana to Mexico. A man named Pérez Prado helped this happen. His music and dance were widely adopted. Famous dancers like Ninon Sevilla were part of this era. Other stars included Maria Antonieta Pons and Tongolele. Meche Barba and Resortes were also popular. These dancers appeared in Rumberas films. They showed the world this wonderful style.

In New York, the dance changed quite a bit. It became known as "mambo on 2." This is also called salsa on 2. A dancer named Pedro Aguilar was famous. People called him "Cuban Pete." Life magazine called him the greatest mambo dancer ever. He danced at The Palladium in New York. Later, George Vascones helped make modern mambo popular. He led a group called the Latin Symbolics.

Today, many different styles of mambo exist. Some people dance to salsa dura. This is also called old-school salsa. The name "mambo on 2" comes from the rhythm. The direction change happens on count 2. Eddie Torres created a "street" style. He saw these moves on Bronx streets. The RazzM'Tazz company uses different steps. They follow the Palladium Mambo tradition. All these styles keep the music alive.
