He listened to his mother's large record collection. This music helped shape his interests. He wanted to use music to bring people together. Many people say hip hop helped save lives in his neighborhood. He believed in peace, unity, love, and fun.

Bambaataa used new technology to change how music sounded. In 1982, he released a hit song called "Planet Rock." This song was made with the Soulsonic Force. They used a computer called a Fairlight CMI. This was the first American single made on a computer. The song used a Roland TR-808 "beat-box." It also used electronic synthesizers. He stopped using a live band to perform. He chose to rely only on technology on stage. This helped start a new style called electro-funk.

His journey began in a gang called the Black Spades. He rose to be a leader called a "warlord." He traveled to Africa after winning an essay contest. This trip changed how he saw the world. He was inspired by a film called Zulu. He chose the name Afrika Bambaataa Aasim. This name was inspired by a Zulu chief named Bhambatha. He wanted to create a community in his own neighborhood. He formed the Bronx River Organization to help people.

He founded the Universal Zulu Nation in the late 1970s. The group officially began on November 12, 1977. It included rappers, dancers, and graffiti artists. He also started rap crews like the Jazzy 5. The Soulsonic Force was another important group. It had about 20 members at one time. These members included people like Mr. Biggs and Queen Kenya. He used these groups to spread hip hop culture. He even took the first hip hop tour to Europe in 1982.

Bambaataa's music mixed many different styles together. He used sounds from the group Kraftwerk. He also used electronic beats from the group Yellow Magic Orchestra. These sounds blended with traditional funk and hip hop. This mixture created a brand new feeling for listeners. His music was played in clubs all over the world. He helped create new ways to play music, like turntablism. His work helped hip hop grow from a local style into a global movement.
