Lady Pink

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lady Pink is a famous artist from the New York City graffiti movement. She uses spray paint and brushes to make art on walls and canvases. Her work is a way for her to express herself. It is also a way to show that women belong in the world of street art. Many people call her the "first lady of graffiti." This is because she was one of the first women to paint subway trains in the early 1980s.

Making her art involves many different steps and styles. In the early years, she painted large subway trains. She worked with other artists to cover the metal sides of the cars. Later, she moved to painting large murals on buildings. A mural is a very big painting made on a wall. She also works in a studio to make smaller paintings on canvas. She uses tools like spray enamel to create her colorful designs.

Lady Pink was born Sandra Fabara in Ambato, Ecuador, in 1964. She moved to the Astoria neighborhood of Queens when she was seven years old. At first, she wanted to be an architect like her father. She started writing graffiti in 1979 after the death of a boyfriend. An artist named Seen gave her the name "Pink." She later added "Lady" because she liked stories about historical romance and queens.

Her career has many important moments and names. In 1980, she started an all-female group called Ladies of the Arts. She also painted with groups named TC5 and TPA. In 1983, she appeared in a movie called Wild Style. Her art is now kept in famous places like the Brooklyn Museum. It is also in the Tate Modern in London, England. In 2025, she showed her Miss Subway exhibition in London.

Lady Pink's art connects her to the city and its people. She often paints tributes to honor people or events. For example, she painted a train for John Lennon in 1981. She also made a 9/11 Tribute mural in Queens in 2001. Today, she visits schools to teach students about art. She works with students at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. This helps young people use art to talk to their community.
