Breakdancing

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Breaking is a high-energy street dance that celebrates being yourself. It was created by African American and Puerto Rican youth in the Bronx, New York. Many people call it b-boying or b-girling to honor the original dancers.

This dance style is closely tied to the birth of hip-hop music. Dancers move to the rhythmic drum breaks found in funk, soul, and hip-hop songs. The dance is about showing your unique style and skill. It can be a way to compete through something called battling. In a battle, dancers act out insults or attacks through their movement.

A dancer uses four main types of movement to perform. First, they start with toprock, which is dancing while standing up. This helps them find their rhythm and make space. Next, they move into footwork on the floor. Some dancers then perform power moves, which are fast and acrobatic. These might include spins or moves that look like gymnastics.

Finally, a dancer might end a set with a freeze. A freeze is when the dancer stops suddenly in a cool pose. This shows they have total control over their body.

The history of breaking reaches back many years. It grew from many different dance roots. Some elements come from West African dances like the Juba. This included the cipher, which is a circle of dancers. In a cipher, each person takes a turn to dance in the middle.

Breaking also has connections to tap dance and jazz. Some early dancers even looked to James Brown for inspiration. His music showed pride and individuality to the early pioneers. Even Kung Fu films helped influence some of the acrobatic moves.

Important figures helped bring breaking to the public. A DJ named Kool Herc was a central figure in the Bronx. He is credited with helping the dance grow at his parties. One famous party was held on August 11, 1973. It took place in a room on Sedgwick Avenue.

Herc noticed dancers waited for the drum breaks to move. He began playing these parts back to back to keep people dancing. This helped create the specific style of breaking we see today.

Breaking has traveled from the streets to the whole world. It spread to places like Japan, Germany, and France. Large groups like the Rock Steady Crew helped make it famous. They even danced in the movie Flashdance in 1982.

Today, breaking is even an Olympic sport. It was part of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. This happened after a decision by the International Olympic Committee. Now, people all over the globe compete and dance together.
