Freestyle BMX

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Freestyle BMX is an exciting sport where riders use small bikes to perform stunts.

It grew out of BMX racing. Riders focus on style, skill, and being creative. There are no strict rules for how to move. Instead, riders want to show off their own unique way of riding. This sport is very special to the people who do it. It brings together communities of riders and makers. In 2016, the UCI first recognized the sport. It even made its big debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Riders choose from four main ways to ride. Street riders use things found in cities like stairs or rails. Park riders use skateparks made of wood or concrete.

Finally, flatland riders use smooth, flat ground like a parking lot. They use metal pegs on their wheels to stand on. They spend many hours practicing to balance and spin. Each style uses different types of bikes to help the rider.

The history of this sport started in the 1970s. In 1974, Devin and Todd Bank rode on a ramp they built. They lived in West Los Angeles, California. Later, kids rode in empty swimming pools in 1975. In 1976, people were riding at the Runway Skatepark in Carson. Bob Haro and John Swanguen also rode at Skateboard Heaven in San Diego. These early riders helped turn bike riding into a new kind of art. They moved from just racing to doing tricks on the street and in parks.

Many people helped the sport grow over the years. Bob Morales started the AFA in 1982. This was the first group to help run freestyle contests. In 1984, a new magazine called Freestylin' began. This helped the whole world notice the sport. Companies like Haro started making special bikes for tricks. They made models like the Haro FST and the Master. These bikes had bright colors and new designs. By 1987, the sport became very popular with many people.

Today, freestyle BMX is a huge part of bike culture. Even when it was less popular in the 1990s, riders kept it alive. They started their own small companies to make clothes and gear. Now, the sport is part of the biggest games in the world. You can see it on YouTube or in big X Games contests. Famous riders like Garret Reynolds show how much skill is needed. Whether on dirt, street, or flat ground, the joy of riding stays the same.
